More is demanded of
school leadership than ever before. The autocratic approach previously
associated with strong leaders doesn't build the sense of teamwork required to
build a continuously improving school. A laissez-faire approach leaves
teachers, especially inexperienced and struggling teachers, floundering.
Distributed leadership garners staff support, but is tricky to manage well. It
can be hard to distribute authority when the responsibility continues to reside
with the principal.
- Long term professional development for cohorts of principals;
- Group process skills to school leadership teams; and
- Individual mentoring to individual principals and superintendents.
