Lucy West has served New York
City Schools in a variety of roles: as classroom teacher, mentor teacher,
teacher supervisor with a Columbia University Professional Development School,
teacher instruction within Bank Street College, curriculum developer and
assistant principal. Most recently, she has been Director of Mathematics
Instruction for CSD District 2, a district known nationally for its
progressive, innovative and rigorous focus on instructional improvement. Ms.
West’s particular expertise in effective mathematics instruction and the
thoughtful approaches to professional development that foster and sustain it,
have earned her recognition and professional partnerships beyond New York City.
These include:
- Participation in the creation of the Institute
for Learning at the Learning Research and Development Center at the University
of Pittsburgh. Ms. West’s recently published book Content-Focused Coaching:
Transforming Mathematics Lessons is a result of the collaboration between
Community School District 2 and the Institute for Learning.
- Instructing for the Math Solutions 1 series of
professional development courses for Marilyn Burns.
- Serving as principal investigator in a
National Science Foundation Teacher Enhancement Grant: Reconceptualizing
Mathematics Education Through Professional Development.
- Designing and teaching a mathematics course
for New Leaders for New Schools, a national organization dedicated to the
development of principals.
