Audrey Hawkins


Audrey Hawkins began her teaching career in the District of Columbia Schools as an English language arts educator. During her twenty years in the classroom, she also taught drama, public speaking, and humanities. Later she accepted the position of English language arts content specialist in central administration. During her tenure in this position, Audrey:
  • Developed the English standards document for grades 7–12;
  • Coordinated several literacy programs including the Young Authors' Conference, Spelling Bee, Classics For Kids, and the Black Stallion Literacy Project;
  • Taught various literacy-related graduate courses at Howard University;
  • Developed various on-going professional development programs including:
    • Building Reading Skills in the Content Areas,
    • Understanding Contemporary Literature,
    • Introduction to Standards-Based Instruction, and
    • Summer curriculum writing program.

Currently Audrey enjoys mentoring new teachers at four different high schools in Prince George's County Public School in Maryland.
