Dana Semos


Dana Semos, a National Board certified teacher with a Middle Childhood Generalist Certificate, has extensive experience in the classroom and beyond. As an elementary teacher her practice included involvement with several major professional development initiatives including:
  • Multi-year involvement in Delaware's Statewide Systemic Initiative focused on developing and implementing standards-based units of instruction in science and mathematics. Dana created then presented her work across the state as models of exemplary instruction.
  • Lead teacher for the Delaware State Science Consortium in conjunction with the Smithsonian Project, funded by the National Science Foundation.

Since leaving the classroom four years ago to focus on the professional development of teachers and administrators in standards-based teaching, Dana's experiences include:
  • Working for the Council for Basic Education in Washington D. C. to assist in planning and delivering professional development surrounding standards-based teaching, including lesson design, implementation and assessment.
  • Consulting for Learning Effects, Inc. to analyze data in large-scale performance assessment activities.

Currently Dana serves as Director of Children's Education at the Wagner Free Institute of Science in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she:
  • Teaches in-depth, standards-aligned, natural science units in elementary classrooms in the School District of Philadelphia.
  • Collaborates with teachers to plan and deliver learning activities based on national, state and local science and technology standards.
  • Facilitates periodic meetings with teachers, college faculty and Fellows, and Wagner staff to work in partnership on planning comprehensive units of instruction, including performance assessments.
