Direct School Support We provide on-site support to schools dedicated to improving student achievement. We are currently working in 3 high schools. At Dunbar High School in the District of Columbia, we are teaching Reading and Writing in Secondary Content Areas through the Catholic University's Project in Education program. In addition to the scheduled class times, we provide on-site department meeting facilitation and in-class coaching and mentoring. At Balboa High School in San Francisco Unified School District, we are working with the staff to improve students' writing skills and test scores related to writing. This includes developing materials such as rubrics and sets of anchor papers of student writing to illustrate levels of competence. It also includes professional development designed to increase staff skills in teaching writing through 1) monthly professional development, 2) individual coaching and mentoring, and 3) summer workshops. In our work at John O'Connell High School of Technology, a transformational school in San Francisco, our work concentrates on mathematics. We are helping the mathematics department develop instructional materials such as pacing guides and to establish professional learning communities dedicated to continuous improvement in student achievement.
