Sophie Zebrowski Pierce

In addition to the classroom success Sophie enjoyed during her 28 years as a secondary English language arts teacher, she helped forward her district's reform agenda in a variety of ways. She planned and facilitated numerous professional development opportunities for colleagues, helped write the English language arts course of study, served as a master teacher for the National Endowment for the Humanities seminars, and assessed the district's grade level writing submissions.

Retired from the classroom, Sophie continues to serve Cleveland Municipal School District as a member of the Professional Development Support Team and as a mentor for new teachers. She is also active at the state level, as evidenced by her tenure as a member of the Ohio Board of Education Critique Committee for evaluation of certification standards for teachers.

Sophie's dedication and excellence have been recognized. She is:
  • Ohio Teacher of the Year District Nominee
  • BP Inspirational Teacher of the Year
  • Martha Holden Jennings Scholar
  • WJW TV "Thanks to Teachers" honoree
  • Cleveland Magazine's article on "Educators Who Make a Difference"
